With more courses than anywhere else in the country, a handful of annual PGA events, and nearly year-round perfect weather – Florida’s designation as the Golf Capital of the U.S. is no longer a lofty claim, but an undisputed fact.
In a state boasting more than 1,000 pristine golf courses, you’d think it might be hard to stand apart from the crowd. But that’s never been an issue on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel. Our seaside communities have earned the reputation as a golfer’s paradise for its superbly designed, well maintained facilities. While popular seaside fairways continue to draw crowds, some of our lesser-known inland communities boast true crown jewel courses as well.
Since 2007, the River Hall Country Club in Alva – a small riverside suburb northeast of Fort Myers – has treated players to a world-class experience on the links. This Davis Love III Championship Golf Course includes 18-holes and 3-hole short course surrounded by stunning Floridian landscape. Arrive early for a meal and drinks at the Caloosa Grill. Or, visit their Golf Pro Shop for a full lesson or pointers from their professional golf staff.
Nearby in Lehigh Acres, the Westminster Golf Club offers a bit of a challenge to experienced players and novices alike. Built in 1994 by locally famous course architect Ted McAnlis, this public course features strategically placed water hazards and sand traps designed for an exciting game at any handicap.
Copperhead Golf Club, another hidden gem in Lehigh Acres, provides a similar level of difficulty but a very distinct layout. This par-72 course is known for its long, narrow drives down Bermuda fairways surrounded by towering pines. Skilled players will enjoy showing off their distance and accuracy while inexperienced golfers can sharpen their skills at the onsite driving range.
These charming, quiet courses offer flexible tee times and sparsely crowded links without sacrificing an ounce of quality. Plus, once you’ve played a round or two inland, you can start exploring the area’s dozens of other historic country clubs a little closer to the shore.
