Island Hopping Made Easy: Local Transportation Tips

Family biking the beach

One of the main reasons The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel is a great place to get away – other than the shell-strewn beaches, breathtaking sunsets and abundant wildlife – is the area’s convenient location.

When you’re here, you’ll feel as though you’re light years away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But thanks to Southwest Florida International Airport and close proximity to other Florida hubs, coming and going is a breeze. Once you’ve touched down in our little corner of paradise, you’ll find that commuting around town is even easier than it was to get here.

From the airport to your hotel

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) truly is the gateway to our area. Located about 30 minutes from Fort Myers Beach and 45 minutes from Sanibel Island, you can get from touchdown to check-in in less than an hour. Once you’re on the ground, you’ve got a couple options for getting to your resort, hotel or beach house. LeeTran Bus Route 50 will take you from the airport to connecting stops at Bell Tower Shops, Tanger Outlet Mall and Summerlin Square for only $1.25 per passenger. Or, if you prefer a more personalized ride, the area has a number of clean, reliable and fast taxi and limo companies, like Paradise Beach Taxi, Coconut Cab Airport Taxi, Fort Myers Beach Taxi, Fort Myers Beach Limo and more.

Getting around the beaches

As soon as you’re settled in and ready to explore the islands, you’ll find that getting around is a snap. On Fort Myers Beach, the Beach Trolley, the Summerline Square Park and Ride shuttle, and the Bonita Springs Trolley run seven days a week throughout the day. For more information on these shuttles, visit the LeeTran website. If you want to get around while learning a little bit about the area, check out the Sanibel Trolley Tour on Sanibel Island.

Rent and ride

When you’re in a place as beautiful as The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, sometimes the journey can be just as fun as the destination. If you feel like exploring the area at a more leisurely pace, renting a bike, scooter or golf cart can be a fun and easy way to get from place to place. For rentals on Fort Myers Beach, visit Fun “N” Sun Beach & Bike Rentals, Fun Rentals of Fort Myers Beach or Quicky Scooters. To scoot around Sanibel, check out Billy’s Bikes and Rentals. Or, if you’re on Captiva Island, Yolo Watersports Inc. will set you up with a golf cart, scooter or bike.

Getting around offshore

Around here, waterways can see just as much traffic as roads. Some of the area’s best places to explore are only accessible by sea, so you may want to have a water taxi ready. For offshore transit on Fort Myers Beach, call Fort Myers Beach Water Taxi. Or if you’re around North Captiva Island, Island Girl Charters will get you to a secluded spot in no time.
