Do Your Part: Coastal Cleanup Day on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel

Waves hitting the shoreline of a beach

We all enjoy the beach, which is why it’s everyone’s job to help keep it clean. We like to keep our beaches as clean as possible here on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, so everyone can be safe and have a good time. Not only does a clean beach make for a better day on the water for you, it also makes a better habitat for all the wonderful wildlife we enjoy in Southwest Florida. The nesting birds and local fish all depend on us to keep their homes free of our trash.

We're proud of our clean beaches, but the only way they'll stay clean is through efforts like the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day every September. To celebrate, volunteers all around the world head out to the coast to gather as a community and pick up any trash on the beach and in the water. In 2015 alone, 800,000 volunteers collected more than 18 million pounds of trash worldwide.

If you're interested in volunteering in Southwest Florida, you can find a cleanup event nearby or propose a cleanup in your community. If you just want to host a small beach cleanup day party with friends and family, you can always get a do-it-yourself cleanup kit to take with you next time you head to the beach. Even if you don’t live in Florida, remember that all waterways lead to the ocean and you can do your part by cleaning up lakes and rivers wherever you are.

If you can’t make it out to Coastal Cleanup Day, you can always help keep our beaches and oceans clean by donating to the Ocean Conservancy, which plans this event every year, and fight to protect the ocean year round.

Events like these are what make our community so friendly, and what keep our beaches looking so pristine. Read more about our beautiful beaches today!
