There's nothing better in my world than shelling on Sanibel at Lighthouse Beach!
I was blessed to find a Junonia in 2008, only a year after I started free-diving there. It was in 4 feet of water, among some seaweed, just laying there whole and beautiful. It took my breath away - literally - and since there was minimal current that day, I actually came up, got a new lungful and went back down to get it. I smiled the rest of that day and still do when I look at it.
My sister and I free-dive about twice a month there, April thru October. I'm under the water from about 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and it's never long enough. Sanibel is my heaven on earth! You can see some of what I've found at www.floridasheller.com under the artcle "Shell Picture Time".
Cayo Costa, reachable only by boat, was also an incredibly gorgeous place to shell. You look out at the blue-green water and feel like you're in the Caribbean. It's definitely worth the time and money to get there.

Two years ago I spent a week in Boca Grande and was overwhelmed by the piles (yes, piles!) of shells. I've been to Sanibel, Captiva, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, Venice, Siesta Keys, Key West... ALL of them (love them ALL!), but the best so far was definitely Boca Grande. I'll be going again soon. I live up in Ohio, so my very understanding hubby lets me package them up and ship them home because I usually have way too many to carry on the plane!

i love fort myers beach and the lower end is better then sannibel for shelling.

I lose myself shelling all the time. I have to carry a mobile phone so my family can tell me when it 's time to leave. I spent a week on Sanibel and never sat on the beach.My favourite places for shelling are Sanibel and The Isles of Scilly (UK). I love Wentletraps.

Shelling is great anywhere!We also like Shell Island across from Panama City Beach.

He's right - you DO lose yourself in shelling! That's why I like it so much. It's a total unplug from reality, drifting in your own little world of salt and sand and sun - and shells :)
