Sports Re-Imagined at Fort Myers' Imaginarium

The Imaginarium Hands-On Museum mixes the world of sports with the world of virtual reality

Kids can get into the game like never before at the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum in downtown Fort Myers. The educational, fun-focused museum has transformed its popular Sporty Science Exhibit into the interactive Sporty Science Arena, a simulation experience where children of all ages can play five different sports and test their skills, all through the world of virtual reality.

Featured sports include baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer and football. With each game, kids will be able to experience that sport and get immediate insight into their performance.

For basketball, kids can choose from a variety of courts and see how many baskets they sink or miss. Baseball players can assess the speed of their pitch and find out how many strike-outs they got. Hockey players go up against goal tenders and see how their speed, accuracy and reflex time measure up. For soccer, players use real soccer balls to dribble and shoot on goalkeepers, while goalkeepers react in real-time to try and save each shot. Football players assume the quarterback position and throw real footballs to moving receivers at different distances and field positions – kids can kick and pass, taking full advantage of the interactive play.

Kids can also get into the action with the Imaginarium's Sea-to-See Touch Tanks, where they can interact with barbless stingrays, horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs, marine snails, sea stars, urchins and other cool marine life. Land-loving creatures such as iguanas, turtles and chameleons are on display at the Tropical Retreat and Tortoise Corral.

Aside from the museum exhibits, the 4-acre Imaginarium site includes a 100-seat theater, an outdoor pavilion and an 180,000-gallon freshwater lagoon with fish, turtles, ducks, geese and swans. The museum hosts several kid-centric educational programs and special events throughout the year.

The Imaginarium Hands-On Museum is located in Fort Myers at 2000 Cranford Avenue. For more information, call 239-321-7420 or visit www.imaginariumfortmyers.com.
