| A feature in the June 2009 issue of Travel + Leisure magazine names Boca Grande as one of America’s Best Little Beach Towns. The accolade is thanks to the barrier island’s uncrowded, unpretentious beaches and quaint attractions like Boca Grande Lighthouse, the oft-photographed beacon that watches over Gasparilla Island State Park. The “Edenic escape" gives visitors a taste of Old Florida, says article author Tom Austin.
Boca Grande is home to The Gasparilla Inn, a member of the Historic Hotels of America and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and its sister property, the Innlet. Both are charming resorts (Gasparilla Inn has a golf course) where relaxation is the order of the day. While in town, you can dine on local grouper, pompano and soft-shell crab at Temptation, where decorations like a neon martini sign and murals of leaping tarpon add to the kitsch.
Quiet towns are appealing for their whimsy (Boca Grande has streets with names like Damnificare) and lack of theme restaurants and chain stores. In short, they embody the best parts of Florida: the simple pleasures of sun, sand and surf that keep people coming back for more.
