Artist Spotlight: Clay Artist Chuck Koucky
Art and nature come together at this local artist's gallery, gardens and studio, all located on peaceful Pine Island.
By Chelle Koster Walton
For nearly 30 years, local resident Chuck Koucky (pronounced KOO-skee) has been playing in the mud – a special consistency of mud that’s transformed into elaborate vases, pitchers, bowls, trays and mortar and pestles at the hands of this bearded Renaissance man. To his list of talents add teacher, sailing captain and Pine Island gallery and nursery co-owner.
Here’s a snapshot of the eclectic artist and his work:
- Family affair: He opened Koucky Gallery & Gardens with his wife Nancy, a jewelry-maker, weaver and graphic artist. The gallery is situated in the Pine Island city of Bokeelia.
- His style: “I’m mostly a functional potter, but I also do a line of decorative raku pieces.”
- The teacher in him: He taught pottery at Southwest Florida’s Edison State College and continues to teach pottery at his gallery and on-site studio. He’s also an American Sailing Association (ASA)-certified instructor. He teaches out of Miami and offers private lessons in Bokeelia.
- When he’s not at the potter’s wheel: In the summer, Chuck works three months in the Florida Keys running a boat for a Boy Scout sailing, snorkeling and fishing program. “Sailing is an escape. When I’m done sailing, I’m ready to come back to pots.”
- At home with art: Chuck surrounds himself with the work of other local artists, who also teach classes such as glass beadmaking, watercolors and silk painting at his gallery. He and Nancy have a home on the nursery grounds. “The trip to work is a walk out the back door and into the other door.”
See Chuck’s art at his own gallery and at Wild Child Gallery in nearby Matlacha.
